The science behind Cordygen

What is Cordyceps militaris?

Cordyceps militaris is a species of mushroom known for its bright orange, club-shaped fruiting bodies. It has a long history in traditional Asian food and wellness practices, and today it is cultivated rather than harvested from the wild.

Cultivated, not wild-harvested

The better-known wild Himalayan species (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) is scarce and expensive. Cordyceps militaris can be grown under controlled conditions, which makes a consistent, traceable product possible. Cordygen's Cordyceps is cultivated in India.

From culture to product

  1. Culture — the process starts with a Cordyceps militaris culture.
  2. Cultivation — grown under controlled conditions.
  3. Fruiting body — the orange fruiting bodies develop and are harvested.
  4. Processing — dried whole for Cordygen Raw, or prepared as extract for the capsules and tincture.
  5. Product — packed and labelled by Shnikh Agrobiotech in Indore (FSSAI Reg. No. 21426850004712).

What researchers study

Cordyceps militaris naturally contains compounds such as cordycepin and adenosine, which are the subject of ongoing scientific research. Research findings on isolated compounds do not mean that any food product has a particular health effect, and Cordygen products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

How cultivation works, step by step

Wild Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Kida Jadi) grows on caterpillars high in the Himalayas and cannot be farmed. Cordyceps militaris is different: it can be cultivated indoors, which means every batch can be traced from culture to pack. This is the process behind every Cordygen product.

1. Culture

Everything starts with a healthy Cordyceps militaris culture. The culture is the living starting point of the batch, and keeping it clean matters, because anything that grows in the jars later grows from here.

2. Substrate and jars

The culture is introduced to a prepared food substrate in jars. The fungus colonises the substrate first as white, thread-like mycelium. At this stage nothing looks like a mushroom yet — the mycelium is the underground network, not the part Cordygen sells.

3. Fruiting

With the right light, fresh air, temperature and humidity, the mycelium switches from growing to fruiting. Bright orange, finger-like fruiting bodies rise from the substrate. This is the part of the fungus that Cordygen harvests, and the part you can see and check with your own eyes in a jar of Cordygen Raw.

4. Harvest and careful drying

Fruiting bodies are harvested when mature and dried carefully. Drying protects the product during storage and travel without needing the fresh mushroom to be sold within days. A 30 g jar of Cordygen Raw is 100% dried fruiting body — no substrate, no grain, no powder filler.

5. Three formats from one harvest

The same cultivated fruiting bodies become all three Cordygen formats: dried whole as Raw, prepared as an extract for Vital Capsules (500 mg vegetarian capsules), and as a 1:5 liquid extract for the Tincture. The format changes; the ingredient and its source do not.

Fruiting body vs mycelium — why we keep saying it

Many mushroom products in the market are made from mycelium grown on grain, ground up together with that grain. The result can contain a large share of substrate starch and a smaller share of actual fungus. Cordygen sells the fruiting body — the developed mushroom itself — because it is the part whose composition can be stated plainly on a label. Our Journal explains the difference in detail: Fruiting Body vs Mycelium.

How to read a Cordyceps label

Whatever brand you buy, these are the lines worth checking on the pack:

  • Species name — the label should say Cordyceps militaris clearly, not just "mushroom blend".
  • Part used — fruiting body, mycelium, or extract, stated in words.
  • Nutrition per 100 g — on Cordygen Raw this reads: Energy 348 kcal, Protein 28.6 g, Carbohydrate 57.8 g, Total Fat 3.4 g, Dietary Fiber 7.2 g.
  • Named compounds — Cordygen Raw states Natural Beta-Glucans 5.8 g per 100 g and Cordycepin approximately >0.1 g per 100 g, as printed on the label.
  • Suggested use — Raw: 1–2 g daily. Vital Capsules: 1 capsule twice daily with water after meals. Tincture: 1–2 ml (20–40 drops), 1–2 times daily.
  • Manufacturer and licence — Cordygen products are marketed and manufactured by Shnikh Agrobiotech Private Limited, Rau, Indore, Madhya Pradesh 453331, FSSAI Reg. No. 21426850004712.

What we do not claim

Cordygen products are dietary supplements and foods, not medicines. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and research on isolated compounds such as cordycepin is not a promise of any effect from a food product. Where a number appears on this page, it is a number printed on our own labels. If you take medication or manage a health condition, talk to your doctor before adding any supplement to your routine.

Why we cultivate indoors, in India

Importing wild Kida Jadi means depending on a short mountain season, middlemen, and material that is easy to adulterate and hard to trace. Cultivating Cordyceps militaris indoors in India removes that chain. The growing conditions are controlled in our own facility in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, the harvest does not depend on weather or wild collection, and the distance from facility to packing to dispatch is short. That is also why a cultivated product can be priced in hundreds and thousands of rupees instead of the lakhs associated with wild Himalayan Kida Jadi: the cost is in the facility, the time and the care, not in rarity.

Storage, packing and dispatch

Dried fruiting body keeps best away from heat and moisture, in its sealed jar. Capsules and the tincture travel in their original sealed packs. Orders are packed by Shnikh Agrobiotech in Indore and dispatched on the next business day; delivery takes 2–5 days for most of India. Shipping is free across India on orders of ₹999 and above. Every product page on this site repeats the same delivery facts, and our Quality & Transparency page lists exactly what our labels say — and what they do not say.
